Red Yeast Rice is a nutritional supplement that is manufactured by fermenting rice with the Monascus pupureus yeast. It is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopeia as a medicinal food because of its ability to promote healthy blood circulation and cholesterol levels. Red Yeast Rice is naturally rich in compounds called Monacolins and contains trace amounts of plant sterols and isoflavones that may work with the Monacolins to maintain healthy cholesterol level.
