Mechanism
Glycyrrhizin in licorice inhibits 11β-HSD, causing cortisol to activate mineralocorticoid receptors, increasing sodium retention and potassium excretion.
Effect
Hypertension; hypokalemia; counteracts antihypertensive drugs
Management
Avoid licorice supplements with antihypertensives. Monitor blood pressure and potassium.
